Emma Moss and Ben Norris have completed their studies as part of the Russell WBHO Building Student training programme.
And both have secured First Class Degrees, Emma in Quantity Surveying and Ben in Construction Management. Both were mature entrants to the Building Student scheme, having already started their degrees before applying.
Director John Millward, who oversees the Building Student training programme, said: “Huge congratulations to both Emma and Ben, their efforts have been recognised with these exceptional marks and we are delighted for them both.
“Our training programme has been designed to provide students with a balance of theoretical learning and vocational experience, as a holistic approach, ensuring they have the knowledge and capability to excel in the workplace. This route allows us to tailor the training to our exact requirements and we are confident that our graduates will become valuable long-term members of our team.”
Emma Moss, 22 from Preston, undertook an HNC at the University of Salford prior to starting the Russell WBHO Building Student programme, and was therefore able to start in year three of the five-year-course. She joined Russells in 2017 and has worked on live sites in Manchester city centre including The Core at 30 Brown Street, a £6m refurbishment for Boultbee Brooks Real Estate, and is now on the £65m new build Clayton Hotel at 55 Portland Street.
She said: “I have enjoyed the combination of the on-the-job training and completing the university course, as you see what you’re learning about put into practice. I would recommend the apprenticeship route as working in industry while studying enables you to gain incredibly valuable experience.”
Ben Norris, 29 from Warrington, originally worked as a plumber before applying to university to do a construction degree. He joined Russells in his final year, starting on site at the hybrid-hotel scheme in St Peter’s Square for Motel One and StayCity, where he secured useful information to help with his dissertation.
Ben said: “Working on site as an assistant site manager while completing my dissertation was a major benefit to my research on fire safety in pre-cast concrete structures. The on-site information and learning helped to ascertain the relevant information from industry professionals, from subcontractors and design managers through to the client.
“I am enormously grateful for the support I have received from Russells and would 100% recommend the Building Student programme to anyone looking for a career in construction. It is a great platform for those wanting a head start in the sector due to the support provided, the ability to complete academic study, and the access to first-hand experience.”
The Russell WBHO Building Student Scheme enrols between four and eight students every September on construction-related courses at the University of Salford. The five-year part-time degree is fully funded by the company, with students attending one day a week. Trainees also work on live sites and undertake in house training with Russells staff and mentors.
The programme currently has 22 under-graduates, and applicants for next year’s programme will be invited to submit their CV and a covering letter in January 2021.
