Retail & Leisure Specifics

Russell WBHO has delivered in excess of 500,000 sq ft of large format supermarket stores builds, and a further 250,000 at out-of-town retail parks, both new builds and refurbishments. We understand the challenges inherent in retail delivery, in particular, condensed programme schedules and collaborative working with brands’ in-house fit out teams.

Some retail facility construction projects we work on are part of a masterplan like Waitrose in Northwich was the first phase of a regeneration masterplan for the town centre. It included the demolition and remediation of a 4.5-acre site and construction of a new 27,000 sq ft Waitrose supermarket and 208-space car park.

Another retail construction project that was part of a wider plan was Asda at Chatham Waters. The 73,000 sq ft superstore forms part of phase one of the £650 million regeneration scheme on the land in Gillingham. The retail construction project required the effective and efficient development of the store, a 400-space car park, a petrol station and landscaping.

We can also deliver retail construction projects within a retail park redevelopment, like the Ellesmere Shopping Centre in Salford. Russell WBHO were brought in to deliver phase three. This included the construction of 15 new retail units, a 460-space car park and an access road constructed over a fishing lake. The project was carried out while existing tenants remained in occupation.

Waitrose at Walton-le-Dale was another retail construction project that was part of the redevelopment of the retail park. A 40,000 sq ft bowling alley was converted into the new Waitrose to become Preston’s first. The project had a four-month programme deadline for handover to the Waitrose in-house fit out team for the store to open as scheduled.

Our highly experienced retail team understands the specific challenges of working within live retail environments, upgrading space while neighbouring units are occupied and active, where detailed management and safety plans are employed to ensure trading can continue unimpeded and staff and customers are protected.

The leisure facility construction project on Trafford Golf Centre was a refurbishment and extension of the customer and staff facilities. The driving range and golf shop remained open during this time, which required coordination between Russell WBHO and the managers to minimise disruption to business while delivering the project on time.

We delivered 28,000 sq ft of new build leisure facilities for Property Alliance Group at Jubilee Gardens, which formed part of the wider redevelopment of the Cleveleys seafront. The units were designed to attract families with a Vue multi-screen cinema and a Pizza Hut restaurant. The letting of the second unit went to Sub Zero ice rink, so we completed the fit out of the new facility including stadium seating and the installation of a mezzanine floor.

Whether the retail construction or leisure facility project is part of a masterplan, redevelopment, or new build, at Russell WBHO, we have the capacity to deliver to your time scale and budget.

“We’ve worked with Russells before in the North West and were impressed with their track record in delivering new retail facilities, and so brought them on board for this project in Kent. The team didn’t disappoint and delivered the project five weeks ahead of schedule.”
