Building Student Graduate Ben Norris with colleague Emma Moss
Now an assistant site manager with Russell WBHO, Ben Norris secured a First class honours degree in Construction Management from Liverpool John Moores University in summer 2020
“I started work as a plumber but after a few years realised I wanted something different and took it upon myself to develop my skills further. I got onto the Construction Management course at Liverpool John Moores and, in my final year, applied to the Russell WBHO Building Student training programme.
“Building Student trainees are usually school leavers so I came through a different route to most, joining Russells with most of my degree complete.
“I was really pleased to be made an assistant manager at the Motel One / StayCity hotel project in central Manchester and have been lucky enough to work on several packages and gain experience of a range of different things.
“Working on site while completing my dissertation was a major benefit to my research on fire safety in pre-cast concrete structures. The on-site information and learning helped to ascertain the relevant information from industry professionals, from subcontractors, design managers through to the client.
“I was thrilled to get a First and am really grateful for the support from Russells. I only wish I had taken the decision to do the degree and apply to Russells earlier in my career.
“I would 100% recommend the building student programme to anyone looking for a career in construction. It is a great platform for those wanting a head start in the industry due to the support provided, the ability to complete academic study, and the access to first-hand experience.
“I am looking forward to progressing through the management roles at Russells, while developing my knowledge and experience, with the support I have already received I feel Russells is the best place to achieve this.”
