Russell WBHO wins ‘Apprentice Large Employer of the Year’

What a great way to end National Apprenticeship Week!  Russell WBHO won ‘Apprentice Large Employer of the Year’ at The University of Salford’s Annual Apprenticeship Awards held on the 8th February 2024, at the Etihad Stadium.

Our Building Student programme provides a great opportunity for students, especially those who do not want to attend university full-time. Throughout the first two years, students gain in-depth experience within different departments on a 6-month rotational basis. University of Salford said “Day in, day out, Russell WBHO demonstrates strong dedication to providing apprentices with a comprehensive and supportive learning environment, as well as outstanding commitment from the Directors and Senior Management Team to the growth and development of their apprentices”.

Russell WBHO invest in the educational and professional advancement of their Building Students, offering not only valuable on-the-job training but also opportunities for skill-building and career progression, such as CPDs, internal training workshops, SMSTS etc. Moreover, the Building Students are heavily involved in promotional projects for the business (and the Construction Industry as a whole) including videos for the staff seminars, charity/community events and talks with schools/colleges.  This helps to build their confidence and interpersonal skills, something which is transferable to site. Russell WBHO maintains a strong culture of inclusivity, diversity and safety, ensuring that Building Students are not only well-prepared for their roles but also treated with respect and care.

Nathan Gollins and John Millward were proudly on hand to accept the award.

John Millward, construction director said, “It’s a huge honour to win the award, we are over the moon, especially given the strong shortlist this year.  All of our staff fully embrace our Building Student Programme and winning is testament to their enthusiasm and support.  Well done to all those shortlisted on the evening, as well as the category winners.  Also, thanks to University of Salford for hosting the event, it was a great evening.”
