Fresh Faces: Russell WBHO Welcomes New Building Students

Russell WBHO has welcomed four new recruits onto its acclaimed Building Student Programme, beating off competition from more than 200 applicants.

Alex Benson (Warrington), Alistair Clay (Altrincham), Cory Irvine (Stockport) and James Wharton (Worsley) are the latest to join the award-winning five-year scheme, which combines full-time employment with a part-time degree at the University of Salford.

Over the first two years, the students rotate through different departments before specialising in areas such as Construction Management, Design Management, Engineering, Estimating, Quantity Surveying, HSEQ or Building Services. They join seven other Building Students already progressing through the programme.

Russell WBHO’s Construction Director, John Millward, said: “The Building Student Programme is central to how we invest in the next generation. It gives young people the knowledge, experience and confidence to deliver multimillion-pound projects while earning a wage, gaining a degree and having all fees covered. Construction is a well-paid and rewarding profession, with excellent career prospects and our programme offers a unique alternative to the traditional degree route.”

The scheme’s reputation speaks for itself: Russell WBHO was named Best Large Employer at the 2024 University of Salford Apprenticeship Awards, and many graduates now hold senior positions within the business.

“The calibre of this year’s intake was outstanding,” John added. “We look for passion, commitment and drive — and we’re confident Alex, Alistair, Cory and James will thrive. Our Building Students bring fresh energy every year, and we can’t wait to see how this group develops.”

Cory Irvine – Pre-construction & Estimating (Head Office)

James Wharton – HSEQ (across multiple sites)

Stay tuned as we follow their progress — but for now, let’s meet the new Year 1 Building Students…

Drawn to construction for its mix of teamwork and tangible results, Alex was inspired by family and friends already in the industry. Russell WBHO’s unique Student Programme stood out as a chance to gain real experience while studying, supported by impressive projects that sparked a desire to get involved.

Through the programme, Alex hopes to build knowledge, gain hands-on experience, and form valuable connections that will help shape a long and successful career.

Alex said, “I think I can be of value to the company as I am hard working, dedicated and passionate. I work well in cooperative scenarios and I am eager to meet new people and learn new things. I have limited experience and knowledge at the moment but as that comes with the progression of the programme I have no doubt over the next five years I will work hard and become an increasingly valuable asset to the company.”

Outside of work, Alex enjoys keeping active through football and boxing.

Inspired by the transformation of Manchester’s skyline, Alistair was drawn to the construction industry and to Russell WBHO in particular, impressed by the company’s reputation and his own positive experience during a work placement last year. Watching projects he visited come to life over the past 12 months further fuelled his enthusiasm.

Through the Building Student Programme, Alistair hopes to build a strong foundation of knowledge and experience to launch a long-term career in construction.

Alistair said, “I feel the key skills that I can offer at this stage are that I am a motivated individual with a passion for the construction industry. I am enthusiastic, hardworking and a team player and I am eager to learn from my new colleagues.”

Outside of work, Alistair keeps busy with football, padel, skiing, water sports, and spending time with friends.

With family ties to the industry and early experience in construction recruitment, Cory’s curiosity grew for the “white-collar” side of the business. Russell WBHO’s Building Student Programme stood out for its unique opportunity to explore different areas before choosing a specialism.

Cory is eager to learn from a diverse team of experts, gain hands-on site experience, and work towards his qualifications.

Cory said, “I hope to promote the core values of Russell WBHO such as “Responsibility” due to an interest in sustainable construction and some experience in social value. I work well with others as part of a team, which I think is important in construction due to the multiple moving parts within a project.”

Outside of work, Cory enjoys travelling, hitting the gym, listening to music, and following his beloved Manchester City.

James’ interest in construction grew from hands-on work experience, where he saw first-hand how projects take shape through teamwork and problem-solving. Russell WBHO stood out for its strong reputation, diverse projects, and supportive culture that invests in developing young talent.

Through the Building Student Programme, James is eager to gain on-site experience, build new skills, and apply his studies at Salford University to real-world projects.

James said, “I will bring a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and hopefully a fresh perspective. I am enthusiastic about starting my career in construction and eager to apply the skills I have developed through my studies, such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. I am motivated, reliable, and ready to take on new challenges. I believe my positive attitude and commitment will make me a valuable addition to the company. I am incredibly grateful that Russell WBHO have given me this fantastic opportunity.”

James is passionate about football, playing regularly for his local team (Moorside Rangers First in Swinton), and keeps active through gym sessions and more recently, padel.
