And finally as a perfect way to cap off the week, we popped over to our Fairmont Cheshire The Mere project to see our Building Students and the Sub-Contractor Apprentices in action and have a chat about their roles and aspirations in the construction industry.
Our Russell WBHO Building Students Emily, Lizzie, Tom and Alfie work with apprentices from Cara Brickwork and A&B Engineering.
Dylan from AB Engineering is working towards becoming a fully qualified Building Services Engineer. Dylan said, “Russell WBHO as the main contractor, have provided me with invaluable site experience, allowing me to see how large-scale projects are managed from start to finish. Working alongside them has helped me understand project coordination, contract management, and the importance of clear communication between different trades. Their approach to site management has given me a better appreciation of the bigger picture in construction projects”.
Alfie, Assistant Package Manager is working with the Firestopping Contractor and his role includes spraying on steel beams, the encasing of steel columns and the firestopping within the internals of the building.
Alfie said, “Russell WBHO has helped me through every step of the way through my career so far. They have put me through University, they have provided me with a number of training courses and workshops, and also given me on the job experience, which I believe to be the most valuable thing I have received”.
Emily is working with the Managing QS, procuring subcontract packages. Inspired by her dad’s role as a Civil Engineer, she feels that the construction industry offers a diverse range of apprenticeship and degree opportunities. Emily hopes to become a Chartered Surveyor and said of her time at Russell WBHO, “Despite my relatively short time here, Russell WBHO has provided me with numerous valuable training sessions, such as those on M&E and Piling. These have greatly enhanced my understanding of the industry, and I look forward to participating in future sessions. With support from my mentor, we have produced a Personal Development Plan to guide my growth, incorporating various key objectives for my role”.
Lizzie currently in Year 4 of her Quantity Surveying degree, has always had a passion for how things are built and the process behind turning designs into reality. She enjoys working in an industry where no two days are the same and you can see the results of everyone’s hard work.
Lizzie said, “Russell WBHO has played a key role in my development by giving me the opportunity to take on real responsibilities early in my apprenticeship. I have been working alongside experienced professionals who have supported my growth. The team at Russell WBHO has always encouraged me to ask questions, challenge myself, and continuously improve, which has helped me build confidence and develop my commercial awareness.”
