Hanover, the £34million refurbishment project Russells undertook as part of the NOMA regeneration programme, has been honoured with a national award.
Hanover was named as the Best Recycled / Refurbished Workspace in the hugely prestigious British Council of Offices annual celebration.
The Grade II-listed former drapery warehouse was brought back to life by the project team, led by main contractor Russells Construction, alongside architect Shepherd Robson, project managers Workman and the client Hermes Investment Management.
By far the largest of the newly restored heritage stock within the NOMA scheme, Hanover provides 90,000 sq ft office space, with 30,000 sq ft of retail, and has become the Manchester headquarters of Amazon UK.
Gareth Russell, director, said: “We knew this was a special building from the very start and, as the project progressed and the vision was realised, that become evident to all who saw it. The client’s commitment to the preservation and revitalisation of the original character and heritage was commendable and, thanks to their persistence, the architect’s creativity and our skilled implementation, the Hanover has been reborn as a truly stunning asset for the city.
“The project has been picking awards since we handed it over last November, and we are really pleased for everyone involved in the project that it has been recognised by the most well-respected body in the office industry. We are all very proud to have played our part in this wonderful project.”
What the judges said:
Ian Aldous, Chair of the BCO’s Northern Judging Committee, commented: “The transformation of Hanover is truly exceptional and is a testament to the strength of the Northern office market. The project has breathed new life into the Edwardian build; the team should be very proud.”
Richard Kauntze, Chief Executive of the BCO, said: “The standard of nominees at our National Awards astounds me each year. Each year, I believe we genuinely see the best of our sector redefine what best practice looks like. The Hanover building is testament to a dynamic city. Congratulations to the winners and all those nominated.”
