A winning hat-trick: Large Employer of the Year for the third time

We’ve been crowned Large Employer of the Year at the University of Salford’s Apprenticeship Awards – marking the third time we’ve received this accolade, following previous wins in 2020 and 2024.

The award celebrates outstanding dedication to developing apprentices and recognises the continued success of our Building Student Programme, which has been shaping careers for more than 20 years.

Held at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester as part of National Apprenticeship Week, the ceremony brought together employers, educators and apprentices from across the region. The trophy was presented to our Construction Director, John Millward, who oversees the Building Student Programme. He was joined by two current apprentices and a former building student, who is now a Quantity Surveyor with us, reflecting the programme’s long-term impact.

John said: “This is a fantastic achievement reflecting on our long-standing commitment to helping young people build successful careers in construction.

Since launching in 2004, our Building Student Programme has continually evolved, providing training across all major construction disciplines as well as vocational skills, mentorship and opportunities for personal development. We’re really proud to see its positive impact recognised for a third time.

Congratulations to all the winners and those shortlisted who together are playing a vital role in developing a skilled workforce for a wide range of industries.”

Our Building Student Programme is open to students who have completed A-Levels, BTEC Level 3 or equivalent, combining on-the-job training with a fully funded part-time degree. Rotating through 8 departments during their first two years, our students then select their specialism for the final three years of the course. Applications for the next intake for the Building Student Programme will open in October 2026.
