Time to celebrate

Russell WBHO HSEQ Awards 2020 Team of the Year winner 3 St Peters Square Project Team

The awards took place just prior to the Christmas break with presentations made by joint managing directors Andrew and Gareth Russell.

With social distancing in place, and with some awards handed over via the magic of video calling, the winning members of staff were presented with their trophy and a bottle of champagne in celebration.

• Team of the Year (Construction)
The 3 St Peters Square project team, building the new Motel One Staycity hybrid hotel in Manchester city centre

• Team of the Year (Homes)
The Russell Homes aftercare department

• Notable Individual of the Year
Human resources manager Olivia Lea

• Notable Operative of the Year
Steve Greenwood, site operative currently working on the Lineage Logistics project at Great Haddon, Peterborough

• Special Award (Covid19 Champion)
Lee Hamer, site manager at the Peel L&P apartment scheme at Chatham in Kent

The awards were featured in a Review of the Year video distributed to all staff as the usual annual meeting and awards event was unable to go ahead due to Covid restrictions.

Nevertheless, it was important to still take the opportunity to recognise and reward staff, who have worked harder than ever in light of the challenging year, said joint MD Gareth Russell.

He said: “Huge congratulations to all those who were nominated, you all do a fantastic job for this company each and every day and your efforts do not go unnoticed. Special congratulations of course to the winners, teams and individuals nominated by their colleagues and managers.

“These awards are an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of health and safety and quality in the work that we do, and to recognise the efforts taken by everyone throughout the year.

“The particular challenges of recent months have reaffirmed the necessity for good leadership, teamwork and communication in promoting health and safety throughout the business, and we must also thank the health and safety team for the additional work they have taken on with regards keeping teams safe and Covid-secure during the pandemic.

“Despite the challenges, 2020 proved to be another very successful year for the company, with turnover up to a record high of £140m and a number of major projects on site.

“We are optimistic for the coming 12 months with new project starts and significant milestones planned throughout the year, and a secure order book for more than £100m.

“We can’t do any of this without the skills, talent, experience and commitment of this incredible team that we have built here at Russells, so once more a huge thank you to everyone.”
