Russells launches 2018 pre-graduate training scheme

Leading regional contactor Russells Construction is on the look-out for young talent as the firm launches its 2018 pre-graduate training scheme. The £90million main contractor, which is based in Manchester and works nationally, is appealing to schools and colleges across the region to encourage their students to consider a career in construction.

Recruits to the pre-graduate training scheme are enrolled onto a fully-funded part-time degree course at the University of Salford and will also work from Russells HQ in Trafford Park, shadowing senior staff and working on live projects from day one.

Designed by construction director John Millward, who will oversee the trainees along with a series of mentors, the in-house training supplements the university syllabus and see trainees experience five placements in different areas of the business in the first two years. They will specialise from years three-to-five and qualify in one of a variety of professional roles, before being offered a permanent position as a quantity surveyor, estimator, site engineer or in site management.

The scheme is a much-needed investment in the future of the industry, and will benefit the business itself, according to the firm’s directors. Gareth Russell said: “The skills shortage is one of the largest challenges to our industry, but it is also the one that we have the most ability to influence.

“Russells has always had a strong track record in bringing on junior staff and many of our current senior management team have come through this way. With this scholarship we are extending and formalising a programme which will help us build the teams we need to take this business forward as we continue to grow, and will support our succession planning.”

The Pre-Graduate Training Scheme is open to school leavers and college students with 104 UCAS points, or an ONC in construction. Applications are welcome at any time. Students, parents, teachers and careers advisors can visit the Russells Construction website for more information
