Hotel Construction Project Specifics
Russell WBHO teamed up with Motel One to deliver their first Manchester hotel on London Road. The hotel construction project included:
The build required piling to the basement foundation in situ. Above the first floor transfer deck, precast concrete was used. We also used a precast outer sandwich panel throughout, including the inner leaf of concrete, these insulation and PCC panels were constructed off-site.
Russell WBHO were then contracted to work on the challenging hotel project, Motel One on Cross Street. The project required demolishing an existing office building and developing the new 6-storey, 298 bedroom hotel within a very tight site. We had to work around restricted site access in the heart of the city centre and minimise disruption to existing tenants and adjacent businesses.
While demolishing the existing office space, we had to retain the historic stone facade to maintain the character of the Cross Street area. Alongside the hotel, we also had to develop ancillary spaces, a self-contained retail facility and onsite parking.
We have completed two hotel construction projects with UK hotel giant Premier Inn. Their Springfield Avenue hotel in Harrogate is a 6-storey, 107 bedroom hotel directly linked to the Harrogate International Conference Centre. The hotel is finished in local York stone, in keeping with the historic spa town’s aesthetic.
Russell WBHO has also worked on the award-winning Premier Inn, Piccadilly in Manchester. To construct the 13-storey, 193-bedroom hotel, we removed previously installed steelwork and utilised and improved existing foundations to construct the 11 stories above ground and the 2 basement floors.
Working on a tight city centre site is something we have vast experience in and innovative construction methods to combat it. For this hotel construction project, we utilised precast sandwich panels, complete with insulation, glazing and brickwork, lifted into place with a single tower crane at the centre of the building. This achieved a build rate of one floor per week and saved an estimated three months of build time.
Awards won at Premier Inn, Piccadilly:
Russell WBHO has extensive experience in hotel construction and the heritage and refurbishment sector, and it was a privilege to exercise both areas of expertise in one project.
The Park Inn by Radisson in Glasgow was a refurbishment project on a Grade B listed 6-storey building dating back to 1872 to create 91 chic bedrooms for the modern traveller. We provided a full turnkey service from building works to decor and furnishings.
The building had laid empty for many years, so the renovation required careful management of the interior installations and preservation of the original features. We worked closely with Historic Scotland to preserve heritage during the hotel construction project – including the original cage lift, flooring and wall tiling. On the external facade the red ashlar stonework was cleaned and gold leaf detail painstakingly recreated.
The hotel is located in one of the city’s main thoroughfares, and the building houses two ground floor retail units, one of which remained open throughout the refurbishment process. Site cabins were housed on stilts above walkways to enable free flow of pedestrians and traffic and to minimise impact on existing businesses.
The sensitive restoration was completed to the client’s full satisfaction, and the hotel opened its doors in 2013.
