Corporate Social Responsibility

CSR

As a large main contractor and major regional employer, we have the ability to affect change and bring real benefits to peoples lives. This can be in the buildings we create, the people we employ, and the communities in which we work.

We have a responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the people who work for us, and contribute positively within our industry and our communities and deliver sustainable outcomes throughout our business.

Economic responsibility

Construction projects represent an enormous investment into the creation of new economically powerful spaces that provide places for people to live, work and enjoy.

Ensuring that investment benefits the local economy is the focus of our responsible sourcing strategy which seeks to recruit locally and utilise sub-contractors and suppliers from as close to each individual development as possible. This priority is echoed by many of our clients who are increasingly requiring responsible sourcing information to provide to their own investors and funding authorities.

Equally important is our investment into our rosta of directly employed staff, whose jobs depend on the financial security and sustainability of the company. Our responsibility to them extends to maintaining a successful profitable business, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of those employees wherever they are working for us, their continued training and development, and our adherence to industry standards and regulations that protect their rights as employees.

Russell WBHO invests in the people and businesses who make things happen:

  •  By maintaining and constantly improving safe working standards, including adherence to ISO and Investors in People
  • Ensuring equal opportunities and promoting a diverse culture and supporting the rights of all workers
  • Providing entry to the industry with work experience and trainee programmes
  • Promoting career development and progression to leadership roles
  • Membership of the Lighthouse Club Mental Health First Aid initiative
  • Responsible sourcing of sub-contractors with fair payment terms

Community and social responsibility

Russell WBHO is committed to corporate social responsibility, particularly in relation to the communities in which we work, and we take up a range of opportunities to engage with local people and charitable causes.

Corporate Social Responsibility isn’t simply about money, it’s about sharing skills and expertise, spreading the site safety and environmental awareness messages, and companies doing their bit when it comes to supporting local causes.

It needn’t cost the earth and can be worth its weight in terms of community relations and staff morale. This might not be easy to quantify but, conversely, an unhappy and demotivated workforce is easy to identify and will have an adverse effect on any business.

We take responsibility for our role as a contractor and employer active across various communities:

  • Respect and support local neighbourhoods, minimise inconvenience and disruption to individuals and businesses
  • Abide by the principles of Considerate Constructors
  • Provide clear communication channels and, where necessary, regular community updates about project progress
  • Work with local schools to promote Health & Safety messages
  • Engage directly with schools, colleges and training providers to provide construction career advice
  • Encourage employees to take part in projects and charity campaigns which benefit the wider community
  • Support project-specific initiatives initiated by clients
